7 Practical Backyard Privacy Solutions

Best Backyard Privacy Ideas

Chilling out in your backyard is a time-honored tradition that everyone should experience at least once. Of course, there are different ways to hang out in a backyard. Sometimes, things like putting together a garden can be even better when you have neighbors to admire your work. Other times, you just want to have a little privacy.

Okay, okay. Most of us tend to want privacy when we’re in our yards. Be it due to nosy neighbors or Peeping Toms, it’s just a good idea to come up with some way of getting a little privacy on your end of things. But, what are the best options for your privacy? We’ve taken a little look…

Privacy Hedges

Privacy hedges are exactly what they sound like. They’re tall evergreen hedges that are meant to obscure your neighbor’s view from whatever you’re doing in your backyard. Most parts of the country can sustain privacy hedges, as long as you don’t live in a desert area.

There are several different species that can act as privacy hedges. Some of the most popular include European Beech, Arborvitae, and privet hedges. If you want to make sure that pesky critters stay away, plant a holly hedge. The prickly hedges will keep most away!

If you want to find an environmentally-friendly way to enhance your privacy, this is a great way to do it. Besides, who doesn’t like having fresh brushes around their garden?

Make A Climbing Ivy Wall

If you have a chain link fence, you already have a good start to some extra privacy. The gaps between all the chains, though, will need to be covered up. A good way to do this is to use your chain link fence to make a climbing ivy wall.

You will need to be patient with this, but you will love the results. Climbing plants will cling to anything that you give them, though they may initially need to be tied to the fence to grow in. This is an elegant way to give yourself privacy while working with your fence.

To make the wall taller than your fence, add small rods where the ivy can continue its crawl, and tie wire between each gap. It’s also worth noting that you don’t have to have walls surrounding all your yard for privacy to happen. A statement wall can suffice in many situations.

Much like privacy hedges, this is a very “green” way to get the privacy you want. If you are not a fan of English ivy, you can try other creeping plants. Morning glory, honeysuckle, and even grapevines can work wonderfully here.

If you can’t wait there are faux ivy walls to set up like this one

Tall Fences

They often say that tall fences make good neighbors, and this might be the case if you are the type of person who needs a lot of privacy. There are tons of different fences (or walls) that you can use to enclose on your property, ranging from solid wood to brick.

There are a couple of reasons why you might want to avoid these, eco-friendliness aside. Tall fences tend to be one of the most expensive ways to get the privacy you want. Moreover, some homeowner’s associations won’t allow you to build fences that are too high up.

However, if your HOA is amenable to this, you will be able to get a fashionable fence that’s all yours. Depending on the fence type you get, you might also be able to paint it. Unlike climbing ivy walls, you can expect tall fences to offer some privacy year-round.

Additionally, if you live in a desert area, a tall fence or a wall could be the only option that you can really have.

Sunrooms

Let’s face it. Most people do not want to have their entire backyard walled off. Most people also want to have a place where they can enjoy fresh air without sunlight beating down on them. This is why it might make sense to have a sunroom installed as a home extension—or even as a standalone area in your yard.

Sunrooms have walls around them, but the walls are typically able to be closed. The windows in a sunroom has a nice screen to them, so you can still get the fresh air. Sunrooms add a large amount of value to a home, which makes them excellent for people who want to flip their homes sooner.

A good sunroom can be expensive, but it’s not something that will be a regret. People adore them, and while they can take a while to erect, they are absolutely elegant in their own right. With that said, sunrooms are more HOA-friendly than cabanas or unusually tall fences.

Cabanas

A cabana is a lot like a sunroom, but it’s not entirely enclosed. It’s a gazebo-like structure that you can place on your patio, on your deck, or right in the middle of your yard. These offer a little bit of privacy while also keeping things elegant. They are super useful to decorate around a pool.

One cool way you can bolster the privacy that a cabana offers is to add canvas curtains to the cabana’s “window” areas. This can help give you a lot more privacy on a visual level. Thicker curtains can also muffle the sounds you make.

While this may be a little bit more beachy than most people want, it can be a chic way to make sure that you get a little more privacy in your yard.

This is a great one that can easily be removed and put up each year.

Sectional Enclosures

When most people think of privacy ideas, they tend to assume that you’re enclosing your entire yard with a wall. This is a great choice, sure, but it’s not the only choice. Sometimes, you just need to have your own little nook in your backyard.

If you are okay with just having a small corner of your yard sectioned away, then you might want to consider doing a sectional enclosure. This is best done with wood. Enclosures have a lot in common with cabanas in the sense that they are mostly open.

You can add built-in flower troughs to an enclosure, add some cool benches, and even give your enclosure an overarching top. Some folks even make a “blended enclosure,” which uses both privacy hedges and wood to get a little extra privacy going on.

Add A Trellis

If you are just looking for a simple way to snazz up a place, then you might just need a trellis. This is large arch-like structure that gives you a nice pathway to your garden. In some cases, it can also look like more of a wall. The idea behind a trellis is simple: use climbing plants to give you a fully private passageway into your yard.

Unlike a climbing ivy wall, a trellis arch has an above-the-head covering. So, this is great if you love the “tunnel of love” look that many tourist attractions have. We suggest using honeysuckle, morning glory, or angel’s trumped for this. It adds to the romantic vibe.

A trellis is also a smart idea if you have a rose garden. Climbing roses always need a place to grow, and they don’t always take well to training on a standard wall. Besides, there’s something totally amazing about walking through a tunnel made out of roses.

These modern looking ones are some of my favorite.
